Unique color and excellent quality - Barnevelder chickens

The popularity of meat and egg breeds of chickens due to their versatility. Besides the fact that they give tasty meat, they are almost the same as egg yarn in egg production. Moreover, it is not difficult to maintain them. Most of them are unpretentious, calm, do not create problems in the economy. Barnevelder is one of the most beautiful, but not very common breeds of chickens in Russia.

The name of the breed was given by the name of the Dutch town of Barneveld, in which it was bred. Its creation, begun at the end of the 19th century, was completed in 1910, when the national association recognized Barnevehder as a breed and adopted its standard.

The Barnevelderskie hens were taken to produce eggs of dark chocolate color, which were in demand from buyers. But it was not possible to achieve this goal, often the eggs have a terracotta color. But the plumage was a unique breed - the feather has a double edging. In the breeding of the breed, the Brahms, Longshars, Rhode Islands, Cochinchins, Indian Fazanov Brown and local Dutch layers participated.

Features

Barnewelders make an impression of a strong, strong bird, and in practice it fully justifies this impression with good health. They are easily tamed, friendly to man.. The owners of the farm should not be afraid to let small children into the yard, even the Barnewelder roosters will not harm them.

Chickens are good chicks, which greatly simplifies the life of their owner, the incubator will not need to be often.

Traditionally it is believed that Barnevelders do not fly, and quite a small fence will be enough for them. But some owners say that their birds are quite capable of taking off, and moreover, they even love to do it. So it is worth it either to insure yourself in advance and put up a sufficiently high fence, or to carefully monitor the growing or newly acquired bird so that it does not fly out of the area allocated to it.

The disadvantages of the breed include the love of digging (tend to damage the landing on the site) and laziness of its representatives. Because of this quality, such birds need a larger walking distance than most other meat and egg breeds. But laziness has its plus.

Content and cultivation

The friendliness of these birds extends not only to people, but also to their own kind. You can settle them with any other breeds of chickens and bird species, Barnevehlders are not shy and not cocky. For weather conditions unpretentious, do not require any special conditions of detention and cultivation.

Eat everything that will give the owner. In the grain mixture will not look for seeds of a favorite species, like other breeds, peck all without a trace. Especially will be happy corn, greens.

Chickens start to sweep at about 6 - 7 months of age, eggs give good results even in winter.

The lack of movement can provoke diseases of the paws - if the lifestyle is too calm, the vessels supplying the paws with blood begin to atrophy.

Specifications

The mass of roosters of this breed ranges from 3 to 3, 5 kg, chickens - 2.5 - 2.75 kg. The smallest egg weight for incubation is 60 g, in general, the egg weight can reach 80 g. The dimensions of the rings are 3 (for a rooster) and 4 (for a chicken).

Egg production is quite high, about 180 eggs per year. Due to the fact that the Barnewelder chickens are caring mothers, the hatching is 95%, and the chick survival rate is 94%.

Where can I buy in Russia?

In our country at the moment it is quite difficult to acquire Barnevelders. In individual farms that have ordered poultry from Europe, they can be found using information from farmer forums or word of mouth. Of the large farms on which you can get an egg, young or adult birds, perhaps, only known:

  • "Bird village"or" Ptica Village ", located near Yaroslavl (contact phones +7 (916) 795-66-55, +7 (905) 529-11-55);
  • "Chicken Courtyard"in Apsheronsk of the Krasnodar Territory (contact phones +7 (918) 216-10-90, +7 (918) 166-04-10).

The interest in this breed in Russia has increased in the last 2–3 years, and it can be hoped that these chickens will soon be available without any problems everywhere.

Analogs

In the "technical" plan, Barnewelders could not be replaced with another breed. Suitable, for example, are the Sussexes, the Oryol hens or the representatives of the Adler silver breed that are common in our country. If you are looking for a breed that would give both an egg and meat that has an interesting plumage, you can pay attention to Amrox, Araucana (by the way, also carries eggs of an unusual color - turquoise), curled chickens or Krevker.

Summing up, we can say that if you are lucky enough to become the owner of Barnevelder type chickens, you will get a bird in your farm with good meat and egg production, healthy, with good character - almost ideal, besides, the appearance of this breed can decorate any poultry yard.
