Features of growing

Seeds are sown in the second half of March. Before planting, they can be treated with a growth stimulator for better germination. The soil is composed of a mixture of garden soil with humus.

Tip: It is preferable to use the land in which later grown seedlings will be planted. It is taken from the beds, which grew legumes, cabbage, and spicy herbs. Do not use soil from under eggplants or peppers.

Seeds are sown with a slight deepening, planting is sprayed with water, covered with foil and placed in heat. After the emergence of shoots, tomatoes need bright sunlight or artificial light, moderate watering with warm water and a temperature of 20 to 22 degrees. When the first true leaflets appear on the seedlings, they swoop down and feed them with liquid complex fertilizer.

The transplant begins in the second half of May and early June. The soil is mixed with humus, wood ash is spread out over the holes (1 tbsp per plant). On 1 square. m can accommodate 3 plants. Watering them should be moderate, only with warm settled water. Tomatoes are sensitive to fertilizing. Before the start of flowering, nitrogen-containing complexes are preferred, after the formation of ovaries, the bushes are fed with magnesium sulfate or sprayed with an aqueous solution of superphosphate.

To improve the quality of the fruit, tomatoes are formed in 2-3 stems, removing the lateral stepsons above the third brush. To speed up the formation of ovaries will help pinch off extra flowers on the hands, as well as remove the lower leaves. Be sure to be tied to stakes or trellis.

Diseases and pests

Old tomato varieties are susceptible to viral and fungal diseases. Preventive measures will help protect them. Land before planting is shed with a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulphate.

In the intervals between watering the soil is loosened, for the prevention of root rot it can be mulched with humus or peat. During the period of late blight epidemics, plantings are treated with copper-containing preparations.

Insect pests can be controlled with industrial insecticides, as well as household products: infusion of celandine or onion peel, liquid ammonia solution or laundry soap.

Large-fruited, easy-care tomatoes of the Black Russian variety are excellent for home gardens. Seeds for subsequent planting can be harvested on their own, from ripe fruits.
